🌍 A Framework Program for Rural Entrepreneurship in Burundi 🇧🇮
The Rural Entrepreneurship Development Program (PRODER), funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), is part of Burundi’s national strategy for inclusive growth. Its goal is to accelerate rural entrepreneurship, promote the economic empowerment of young people and women, and support the sustainable transformation of the agricultural sector.
PRODER is implementing a key initiative, the Cost-Sharing Fund (FACP), designed to finance and support business plans developed by young rural entrepreneurs. This co-financing mechanism aims to strengthen the viability of local businesses, stimulate job creation, and improve incomes in rural areas.
🚀 A support system rooted in local communities
The program is organized around four regional hubs—West, North, Central, and Southeast—covering all twelve provinces of the country. Each hub comprises local teams responsible for approving entrepreneurial projects, providing technical and financial oversight, and building the capacity of beneficiaries.
To ensure the process is effective and transparent, PRODER also plans to digitize the monitoring and reporting system in order to track all funding and evaluate results on the ground.
🎯 Objectives and Expected Results
The program’s priorities are organized around four main areas:
- Support for the creation of sustainable rural businesses, particularly in the agricultural and agri-food sectors.
- Economic inclusion of women and young people, with targeted support and fair selection criteria.
- Building local capacity through training and mentoring of project leaders.
- Modernization of monitoring tools to ensure transparent and effective management of the Cost-Sharing Fund.
These initiatives will help strengthen IFAD’s impact in the region and consolidate a model of responsible and inclusive rural entrepreneurship.
